This painting is exercise 17 from Block 3 of Evolve Artist, and was painted from a photo.
To be honest, this was my least favourite Block 3 painting so far. We had to paint this same photograph in greyscale in Block 1, where I messed up the gradient on the skittle. I didn’t enjoy it much first time around, so I wasn’t too happy about having to do it again in colour! Also, there are a handful of exercises where there are two different photos, so not all students are painting the same thing. This was one of those, and the alternative photo had a cat ornament, which I’d have enjoyed more since I like painting animals. So it was doubly annoying to have to paint a subject I didn’t want to do. Anyway, that’s enough whining 😀
I found the skittle quite challenging, since it had a lot of surface texture and I wasn’t really sure how much of that we’re supposed to be trying to include, or where to try to match the colour from. I wasn’t very happy with it, but as it turned out, I got good feedback on this part. However, I made a mistake on the cylinder, which I thought was okay. So I’m still not a great judge of my own work!
I’m glad to have got this one out of the way, and the subjects on the remaining three Block 3 exercises should be more fun for me 🙂
